Someone recommend me poetry
So my little sister has never been a huge reader but she's recently taken to a bit of poetry and has asked for some more for Christmas.
Who is everyone's favourite poet, or poetry collection or do you have anything to recommend? She is in her early 20s, I would like to find something not too dark, more something upbeat and young, contemporary?
I'm a massive fan of spoken poetry, would that work?
Oh my gosh yes! I hadn't even considered that idea. I could try to get some recordings and gift them on a USB stick or something.
There are a lot of types of spoken word. I love thought provoking ones, but instead of going that route (they tend to be dark), I highly recommend this lovely lady: https://www.ted.com/talks/sarah_kay_if_i_should_have_a_daughter
And this guy is just awesome with alliteration https://www.ted.com/talks/harry_baker_a_love_poem_for_lonely_prime_numbers
It's a bit of a cliche, but she might love Dylan Thomas or Allen Ginsberg.
If you go the spoken poetry route, you should definitely give Shane Koyczan a try. He's an awesome guy but might not be what your sister is looking for. Try this poem (warning: some strong language but sparse and with good taste):
