Character Respond Answer Ask (May Edition)

  • @Blackbird That's just depressing. The poor survivor must be so lonely. And you can count on me to feel a little horrible. Just like a tiny bit though. I can't reveal that I have a heart. (But no tbh I'm emotionally invested in your characters and I have read books where I predicted on page 1 which characters were dying and I was still crying at the end.)

@Blackbird said in Character Respond Answer Ask (May Edition):

Resa's answer made me think of Birdemic. Have you ever seen that movie? It's... The best horrible thing ever.

I searched "Birdemic" and the first thing I saw on the page was a 1 star on IMDB.... from 15,594 votes.

Look, if this is Sharknado quality, I cannot watch it. I'm sorry. I don't drink. It's just not happening.

That was actually based on what happened to me once. I told my sister not to give that bird some bread... but she did... and... no. I'm scarred for life. They just kept hovering, waiting for more, glaring at us...

(that's a little dramatic but I couldn't even pull out my sandwich or the one that they kept on guard would call his friends back and then we'd be surrounded again -_- )

See, this post is the reason that I can mark you on my list of "Horrible Authors", but by horrible authors, I don't mean that the writing is horrible quality, I mean the author is just a horrible person with no heart.

I mean, that's pretty clear just looking at most of these peeps' backgrounds, but the point remains. she says while hiding some of the horrid things that she has done

Q: Do you like your name?

Resa: I have never thought about this.

Winnie: Me either. Though, now that I'm thinking about it, my nickname kind of sounds like "winner" and... I'm just not sure how I feel about that. And my name is Winter-Run. First off, when have I ever run anywhere? Second off, who runs during the winter?

Resa: ...um. Not me. coughs My name has sail and I've never sailed, so I really don't think you have a point.

Winnie: I'm just saying. Does anybody know how all of this started? Because I think it went wrong somewhere.

I think it started as epitaphs and then slowly morphed into the names you have now, based on the 2 historical person examples I know of.

Winnie: That doesn't even make any sense.

    shrug

Fi: It doesn't even make sense. Absolutely zero sense. It doesn't even matter how you look at it. And then, I don't even get cool nicknames from anyone! Just lame stuff.

Tee: Yes. I feel like when I was named, my creator was hoping that I would be a background character. My nickname doesn't even have anything to do with my actual name.

River: I don't even get a nickname, so you have no room to talk.

Tee: Yes you do. I mean, Mom apparently didn't like it so she didn't stick with it, but you do have a nickname. But, I mean, take your pick. You get River or you get Ring.

River: What can you even make from your name? Watie? Vet? WT? You really drew the short straw on names.

This blew up quickly. I expected them to just go off of their nicknames since that's what they go by informally anyway, but I guess not.

Q: You're travelling somewhere for [X important reason]. On the side of the road, you find someone has been badly beaten and you suspect that they may not live, even with medical attention. What do you do?

  • @typical_demigod Well, I love horrible things, but by normal people standards, I can't for the life of me recommend that movie. It's miles worse than Sharknado. Sharknado would win an Oscar for Special Effects compared to Birdemic. However... I will recommend that you look up "Birdemic most epic scene" on YT just so you can have the experience of watching 59 seconds of terrible actors trying to kill bird gifs with coat hangers. :P

What are these people's full names? lol

I have a vague memory of talking about the names when you first talked about this story, but I don't remember.

And yeeeah... if you think this is depressing, wait until you see what happens with the Wolfpack in this story. I mean... >.>

Q: You're travelling somewhere for [X important reason]. On the side of the road, you find someone has been badly beaten and you suspect that they may not live, even with medical attention. What do you do?

Gabrielle: "If they're as bad as you're making them sound, the best course of action would be to put them out of their misery. But if they are as bad as you're making them sound and I am traveling for something important, stopping to do so might not matter that much to me."

    Johanna: "You saved me."

Gabrielle: "You weren't in that much of a horrible shape so long as the metal spike jammed into your abdomen didn't get carelessly yanked out. Which I wouldn't do because I have a brain, thus, medical attention could have saved you. Which we know because you're standing right here."

Gerald: "I would stop and assess their condition and if they really can't be saved I would put them down and be on my way. I wouldn't leave someone to suffer, but I'm also not going to risk getting myself killed by hanging around."

    Johanna: "Nothing."

    Gerald: "Wow, really?"

Johanna: shrug "Let fate run its course."

Gerald: "That uncharacteristically cold of you, Jo."

Johanna: "We have different concepts of kindness, Gerry. At least right now."

    Gerald: "What do you mean?"

Johanna: "Pain exists for a reason. Death is a process, like any other in life, the terms of which are not for you or me to decide on behalf of a complete stranger."

Gabrielle: "...Like I did with you?"

    Johanna: "It wasn't my time."

    Gabrielle: "..." ponders this

Dani: "I'd probably keep walking. We're not supposed to intervene."

    Lena: "May not live."

    Dani: "Hm?"

Lena: "May not live. Possibly won't live. Possibly isn't definitely. I'm just saying."

Dani: "So what would you do?"

    Lena: "I... Don't know." frowns

Q: What is the meaning of life (to you)?

  • @Blackbird I can't believe I actually googled that.

    Winnie = Winter-Run
    Resa = Fire-Sail
    Tee = Wave-Tie
    River = River-Wake
    Fi = Lake-Fire

I don't know what made me come up with the naming pattern but it is so easy to make up a name for people in the world that I don't really care. Plus, it's English. I can have a word used as a noun one place and the same word as a verb another place. ^_^

Q: What is the meaning of life (to you)?

Fi: My biology teachers all agreed that it was to further the species. I kind of hope there's more to life than that, but I dunno. Maybe there's not. sigh

Tee: Mostly I think it's just pain and then a tiny bit of oh hey this is pretty chill and then it's pain again.

    River: That was unexpectedly... pessimistic.

    Tee: Hmm. I wonder why.

River: I'm... just not going going to respond to that. :| I'm of the opinion that life is meant to be enjoyed to the fullest that you can.

Winnie: I'd say that it's meant to be enjoyed with all your loved ones, and hopefully you can help other people in the process, but you also can't put all of your energy in everyone but yourself.

Resa: See, you're the kind of optimistic person we need more of.

Winnie: What's the meaning of life to you?

Resa: shrug I don't think there is one. We're all here, we get lives of varying lengths, and then we're not here. There's really no rhyme or reason to it.

Q: Would you say you are creative?

  • @typical_demigod said in Character Respond Answer Ask (May Edition):

Tee: Mostly I think it's just pain and then a tiny bit of oh hey this is pretty chill and then it's pain again.

You'd fit right in in Valcrest. >.>

Those are actually pretty cool names. I honest to God hate coming up with character names.

And I once had someone say to me that my character names were too 'common' for a fantasy setting to which I responded politely while mentally screaming every curse word I know. I mean, ugh, don't tell me to get creative with this crap, stupid person in my creative writing class. It's hard enough as it is.

Everyone in that class was an asshole, but hey it was was free so whatever. >.>

Q: Would you say you are creative?

Gabrielle: "I wouldn't say that, no."

Gerald: "You create weapons. All the time."

Gabrielle: "The question is whether I would say I'm creative not whether I am."

Gerald: "Would it hurt to not be so damn literal for once?"

Gabrielle: "Of course not. How would that possibly hurt?"

    Gerald: "I hate you." -.-

    Johanna: "Gerry, don't say that."

Gabrielle: "Yeah, Tucker, that's harsh. I'll probably go clutch my pillow and cry now."

    Gerald: "You don't cry."

    Gabrielle: "..."

Gerald: sigh "Okay, that was harsh."

    Gabrielle: "It's the truth." shrug

What was the question again? -.-

Dani: "I'm a bit too creative I think."

Lena: "True. I think the world could do without half the trouble you manage to stir up on a regular basis."

Dani: "We all have our talents."

Q: What would you say your talent is?

  • @Blackbird Never was a roller coaster fan myself XD

    @typical_demigod nope XD

Do you usually engage in small talk?

Clyde: I try to with others more often, but is more comforting to be isolated with Jacklyn

    Jacklyn: So you're a hermit?

Clyde: Am not! I just like the comfort of my room

    Jacklyn: Yep you're a hermit.

Are you one of those people that says sorry too much?

Clyde: I don't think so. I try to be as good of a person as possible and apologize when needed.

Jacklyn: He's not, he's just very well mannered

    Oscar: Nope, not me.

    Clyde: ???

Oscar: I dont say sorry a lot.

Clyde: Cause you never need to

What trait do you find most attractive in a potential date?

Clyde and Jacklyn: blushing I-I'm not sure

Clyde: I-I-I never b-been on one.

    Jacklyn: N-Neither have I

Oscar: I would say....hmmm. Not sure. That's a tough one. I never have been picky about women.

Clyde and Jacklyn blush really red

What is your deepest darkest secret

    Clyde and Jacklyn: pass

Oscar: sighs gonna have to pass too

If you could eliminate one thing from the world, what would it be

    Clyde: ...sickness

    Jacklyn: cruelty

Oscar: While there is a lot in this world that needs fixing, there isn't really any point in complaining and wishing that things will get better. If things are to become good again then we must do so by action.

How do you feel about goats

    Clyde: Why?

    Jacklyn: Why does this matter?

Oscar: Is this a religious question?

Has an animal ever been a jerk to you?

Oscar: You mean rats and crows? Then yes.

    Clyde: Yep

    Jacklyn: Plenty of times

    Favorite number

All: Whats so special about a number?!

    Do you like your name

Clyde: No, it was given to me by a cruel woman but its better than no name at all.

    Jacklyn: I guess...I'm not sure.

    Clyde: I think it's a nice name.

Oscar: I'm proud to wear my name.

Your traveling somewhere for [X important reason]. On the side of the road you find a badly beaten man that may not live. What do you do.

    Clyde: Mercy kill....again

Jacklyn: I guess I have to do the same....I wouldn't want to but it ends the suffering.

    Oscar: Agreed.

What is the meaning of life to you?

    Clyde: To survive

    Jacklyn: To stay strong.

    Oscar: To preserve.

Would you say you are creative

    All: No

What would you say your talent is

I don't think they know. Its a tough world out there for them

  • @Blackbird Actually, he would probably have an asthma attack and die in Valcrest >.<

@Blackbird said in Character Respond Answer Ask (May Edition):

Those are actually pretty cool names. I honest to God hate coming up with character names.

SAME. Random generators are my best friends unless I can come up with guidelines, but I can count how many naming systems I have (one for Remnants here, and the Fregemepai are fairly easy). Otherwise, it's blind luck.

And I once had someone say to me that my character names were too 'common' for a fantasy setting

Did they have suggestions on how to have less 'common' names, or were they one of those people that would critique a piece and say "I found it confusing" and not explain where/why if possible?

You know, in my creative writing class, everyone was really nice, but only 4 people (who all knew & hung out with each other outside of class) were comfortable talking/sharing their pieces in class. Which left everyone else hanging in the breeze, especially because we posted them all online, but our teacher critiqued the first 3-ish assignments of the semester (which I didn't care about ) and then put a grade on people critiquing the last two assignments of the semester (which I... didn't care about). So I got pretty much zero feedback on anything in that class.

I feel like Gabrielle cries a lot more than she lets on.

    @SirBlood Interesting, interesting.

I find it intriguing that 3/4 of the characters here said they would mercy kill the stranger on the side of the road.

Q: What would you say your talent is?

Resa: I can make everyone trust me. I mean, except our mother, but that was kind of my fault. Everyone else, though.

Winnie: You're really confident about that.

    Resa: Yea.

Winnie: I mean... do you have any proof of that?

Resa: What makes you think I can actually give anything to Heaven-Send? I have absolutely no power.

    Winnie: I... That is true.

Resa: That, or driving. I should've been a race car driver.

    Winnie: You should've. pauses I don't know if I have a talent.

Resa: Yours is probably positive thoughts.

Winnie: I'm not sure how useful that is. :/

    River: I'm persuasive.

    Tee: "Persuasive". Ha ha.

    River: Yes, persuasive.

Tee: laughs If that's what you want to call it.

    River: exasperated sigh

Fi: Maybe like. Not dying? I'm very good at not dying.

Q: Name something (someone?) that brings you great joy whenever you see it (them).

  • @typical_demigod Gabrielle does a lot of things more than she lets on. And if there's something she appreciates about Gerald is that he can actually tell when he's gone too far so she doesn't have to admit it. >.>

Eh, the main reason I started writing in English full time (even though it meant practically relearning how to grammar) is because the writing community around my part of Brazil kinda looks down on fantasy works a bit. So communicating with other writers and actually exchanging feedback proved completely pointless to me.But basically that person, in particular, thought everyone in a fantasy book should have like Elvish sounding names because... fantasy, I guess? And I'll admit not all my names are brilliant, I literally had a character in that book named "Bob Johnson" (I changed later), but I'd rather my human characters have human-sounding and mostly pronounceable names. >.>

    River: I'm persuasive.
    Tee: "Persuasive". Ha ha.
    River: Yes, persuasive.
Tee: laughs If that's what you want to call it.
    River: exasperated sigh

What would Tee call it then? ^.-

Q: Name something (someone?) that brings you great joy whenever you see it (them).

    Gabrielle: "No. No, thanks."

Gerald: "Pft, we already know you love us."

Gabrielle: "You're pushing your luck today, Tucker." =.=

    Johanna: chuckle

Sebastian: mumbles "...used to be my sister."

    Kyle: "..."

And now we're sad again... Sorry. :P

Dani: "I have a place I like to go where I can see above the trees... I go there and watch the sunrise sometimes."

Lena: "I don't know... My family I guess. Although 'great joy' might be a bit too much."

Dani: "Wow, I feel so loved right now." snort

Lena: "Let's be honest, there's not much joy in finding you hiding from mom under my bed."

Dani: "Once. That happened once. Not like she didn't just drag me out anyway." sigh

Lena: "Alright, that part was pretty great." chuckle

Dani: -.- "You just like to see me suffer."

Lena: "Only when it's your own damn fault."

Q: Is there someone in your life who always knows when something's wrong with you, even if you don't say it?

  • Q: What would you say your talent is?
Rory: I do art? I wouldn't really call it a talent...
Kal: Rory, shut up. You're brilliant.
Rory: Says the man who can hack systems better than I can and still insists you "don't know how to use computers"
    Kal: Well, I can't.
    Rory: Obviously you can.
Kal: Really, I just got lucky. Honest.

Kal: What would I say my talent is? Stubborn-ness.
Rory: rolls eyes Oh, that's for sure.

Curran: Really, the only thing I do with my life is hunt.
Cassa: That's really just me helping you find the targets so you can go kill them. So really...that's all me.
Curran: Well, it's all I got.

    Cassa: I can keep secrets.
    Curran: Should I be worried?...
    Cassa: shrugs I've kept yours, haven't I?
Curran: I feel like there should be a "so far" statement tacked on to the end of that.

Q: Name something (someone?) that brings you great joy whenever you see it (them).
    Rory: Juniper, of course.
    Juniper: Naturally.
Rory: Even if you are a bit on the conceited side.
    Juniper: And that's your fault.
    Rory: Oh, I didn't say it wasn't.

Kal: ...I don't think I want to say.
    Curran: Oooooooh, embarrassed?
    Kal: Why would I be?
    Curran: Are you in looooooove?
Kal: glares Should you really be the one talking?
    Curran: ...

Curran: Yeah, I'm with Kal on this one.

Cassa: Gods, you guys are idiots. Personally, I just like books. They're words that can't harm people like mine can.

Q: Is there someone in your life who always knows when something's wrong with you, even if you don't say it?
Rory: Again, Juniper, but that's simply by virtue of our connection... Mara always could, but she's gone now.
Curran: I don't know why he likes you. You're always Miss Down-In-The-Dumps.
Rory: frowns What do you mean?
    Curran: Nevermind.
Cassa: This is why my talent is keeping secrets.

Kal: Honestly, no. I'm not really close enough to anyone --
    Curran: Oh come on.
Kal: There's a lot you don't know about me.
Curran: glances at Cassa Is there something I should know?
Cassa: Because I would totally tell you if there was.

Curran: Brady always could...but that was kind of her job as my little sister.
Cassa: You're not exactly hard to read, Curran.
    Curran: Neither are you.
Cassa: shrugs No use in hiding it.
Curran: You're not exactly the most forthcoming, though.
Cassa: Because it's none of your business.

Q: What do you like the most about yourself and why? What do you hate most about yourself and why?

  • @Blackbird They're all good friends.

Yeah.... and, I mean, names can be changed. For all they knew, those were placeholder names. But anyway, a name's a name, right? Double points for pronouncibility! ^_^

    I apologize for English's weird grammar :/

What would Tee call it then? ^.-

tries to decide if Tee's word of choice wouldn't be rather spoilerish

And now we're sad again... Sorry. :P

Let's be honest... we're rarely not sad with these people.

@huckabayjennifer Heya! These people amuse me ^_^

I feel like Cassa is obviously the most trustworthy person, being able to keep secrets, but, at the same time, the fact that they keep all the secrets makes them a suspicious person O_o

Cassa: You're not exactly hard to read, Curran.
    Curran: Neither are you.
Cassa: shrugs No use in hiding it.
Curran: You're not exactly the most forthcoming, though.
Cassa: Because it's none of your business.

    75% of my cast.

Q: Is there someone in your life who always knows when something's wrong with you, even if you don't say it?

Resa: My siblings are usually pretty good at reading me. Except when they aren't. rolls eyes

Winnie: I'm an open book, so it really isn't hard for anyone to tell if something's wrong with me.

River: He's good at reading me.

    Tee: Indeed.

Fi: Probably half of them are dead now D: Well, Nova is half decent sometimes. Purse is sometimes okay, too. Purse is good at reading people in general, though.

Q: What do you like the most about yourself and why? What do you hate most about yourself and why?

Resa: According to someone I used to know, I'm a very confident person, which seems like a good trait. On the other hand, I feel like I don't know how to separate my personal feelings from certain things to look at them objectively, which... yeah.

Winnie: pats on shoulder When I decide to do something, I will get that something done, but sometimes that something is really stupid and I put more effort into it than something actually useful.

    Resa: pats on head

Tee: I'm good at listening to people. If you ever need someone to talk to, I can listen. I'm horrible at talking to people, though. If you need advice, you should probably not come to me :/

River: I don't know, I mean... Anything I say would be shot down anyway. glares at Tee

    Tee: You don't know that.

River: It seems to be a pattern recently.

Tee: You're bad at reading people. There's one part of the question.

River: It's what do I hate about myself, not what you think I do badly.

Tee: Well you're not picking anything.

Fi: I like that I'm an approachable person. I don't really want to talk about the other part.

Q: Do you believe in fairies?

    lol.

    Welcome to the thread! :)

@typical_demigod Yeah, yeah, my people are horribly depressing, I'm a horrible person. lol

Winnie: pats on shoulder When I decide to do something, I will get that something done, but sometimes that something is really stupid and I put more effort into it than something actually useful.

    90% of my characters really.

Q: What do you like the most about yourself and why? What do you hate most about yourself and why?

Gabrielle: "I probably should hate myself more than I actually do, on account of some things I've done, but at this point, I can't be bothered anymore. I'm tall and that's actually pretty neat. So... I like that about myself I guess."

Gerald: stands next to Gabrielle "Huh, we are actually the same height. So, you're about 6' 2''... That is pretty tall."

Gabrielle: "It is. I was taller than my brothers. It annoyed them." smirk

Gerald: "I'm a really perceptive guy and I like that about myself. I'm just not very patient, which, isn't a very good combination. In theory, I could be a really thoughtful guy, but in reality... I'm a bit of an inconsiderate jerk. And I know it doesn't look like it, but I actually don't like that."

Johanna: tugs on the cuffs of her shirt "There's nothing about myself I like."

    Gerald: "...That can't be true."

    Johanna: shrug

    Gerald: "Well... I like you."

Johanna: shakes head and storms off

Gerald: "Okay, how was THAT a bad thing to say?"

Gabrielle: sigh "Don't worry about it. I got this."

    Gerald: confused

Sebastian: "I don't tend to feel fear as much which... Can be a great thing, but can also be a catastrophic thing."

Kyle: "I don't know. I think I'm definitely the smart one, but at the same time, I'm not that great at keeping my emotions in check."

Dani: "I have a lot of qualities and I hate the fact none of them seem all that useful for leadership."

Lena: "That's not true. At all."

    Dani: "Which part?"

Lena: "Which do you think, dumbass? I know you have qualities. Stop fishing for praise."

Dani: "I did no such thing!" playfully huffs

Lena: "I'm smarter than most people I know and I like that. And what I hate... I guess... My enlightenment, sometimes. It's not easy controlling it and I could definitely do without the constant migraines."

Q: Do you believe in fairies?

Gabrielle: "I don't believe in the Gods that are the basis of our society and you think I'd believe in fairies?"

    Gerald: "Why not?"

Gabrielle: "I'm not entertaining this discussion right now."

    Dani: "Not really.

    Lena: "No."

Q: Are you afraid to die?

  • @Blackbird @typical_demigod Thanks for the welcome. (:

@typical_demigod I enjoy watching Tee and River interact~

@Blackbird Ooooh I like how all of your characters interact differently. Like, they're all friends, but their relationships are all very different.

Q: Do you believe in fairies?

Rory: I mean, I do have a pet dragon...
    Juniper: -.- I'm not a pet.
    Rory: I mean...
    Juniper: glares
Rory: What? Your life isn't much different from Missy's. You're always fed, and you demand attention constantly.
Juniper: I'm a fire breathing beast who strikes fear into the hearts of men. She's...a house cat.
Rory: A house cat you let crawl all over you.
Juniper: She at least doesn't call me her "pet."

Kal: Uh...yes? They're not very nice people.
    Curran: The worst, really.
Cassa: Oh, come on. They're not that bad.
    Curran: Name one who isn't.
    Cassa: Lissa's real nice.
Curran: She can read your mind and freeze you to death.
Cassa: That doesn't mean she's a bad person.
Curran: Have you met her best friend?
Cassa: Okay, I don't have a good argument for Alexa, but at least Lissa helps her keep her in check.

Q: Are you afraid to die?
Rory: Honestly...I don't know. I've spent so much of my life around death that it doesn't really seem tangible, you know?

Kal: Absolutely not. With everything I've done, I have it coming. And besides, all of life is a cycle. Life doesn't mean anything if it never ends.

Curran: I have way to much to be doing with my life to die now.
Cassa: I do think it helps that we helped to raise the Goddess of Death...
Curran: I mean, there is that.
Alanna: ...you think that means I'm going to go easy on you?
Curran: Yes? You have saved me on more than one occasion.
Cassa: laughs That was probably your mistake, saving him the first time. Now he's just going to make a habit of it.
    Curran: I'm not that bad.
Alanna and Cassa, together: Oh, yes you are.

Q: What was your childhood escape?

@typical_demigod - Wow.. who knew the apocalypse would put a damper on roller coasters. Oddly, I think that's more depressing than the fact that an apocalypse happened. lol.

@SirBlood - I'm curious about where Clyde, Oscar, and Jacklyn get their food now. :D Also about how old they are.

@Blackbird - I get this image of Johanna being ready to pounce on Gabrielle, and then does, which is immediately followed by the anime smoke cloud of combat, where the hat keeps appearing, and the two fighting for that hat end up a mess on the ground, the hat on Gerald's head as he walks away as if he planned it all. >.> <.<

@huckabayjennifer - Yay! So happy to see you here! :D Kal and Rory are adorable. And Curran and Cassa.. haha. That "so far".. Just what has Cassa done to make Curran add that to the statement! ...And my heart immediately went out to Cassa. Did Cassa hurt someone with words?

Incoming Amelia Stone! I do find it fascinating that you all bring several characters together. I just let my current monthly obsession go. Maybe next month I'll bring .. gasp two characters. Right, questions!

Q: Do you believe in fairies?
Authors note here. This questions cracks me up sooo much because of just how "fairies" work in @Occi's world.
I deal with "vampires", "shapeshifters", "magicians", "demons", "angels", and many "others". Yet I have never ever run across a "fairy". I've seen too much reality to have casual belief. Honestly, I doubt they exist. The stories about there were probably just warped by the "others" I deal with.

Q: Are you afraid to die?
Huh. Deep question. If I ran across you on the street, I'd just shrug and say it happens to everyone so why bother worrying about it. But in the deepest part of me, I am terrified of it. See, I've heard rumours. I've.. seen things. Just..sighs. Look, from everything I've heard, and a few of the little things I have overseen, I don't think death is the end. Nor is it an escape. Things.. exist in that place just beyond the veil and ... shudder.

What is was your childhood escape?
Books. Though not what you're thinking probably. I have a natural affinity for mechanical work. I got lost in books on fuel injection, paint, etc. My childhood escape has become part of my adult hobbies. Working on and fixing my bike, and painting.

Questions for you all: If you could become any animal, what would it be and why?

  • @Blackbird Haha, reminds me of my maternal family. They were all, male and female, super tall, and by super tall, I mean my great-grandfather at 5'11 was the shortest person in his family XD

In theory, I could be a really thoughtful guy, but in reality... I'm a bit of an inconsiderate jerk. And I know it doesn't look like it, but I actually don't like that."

    Pretty much Benito.

Gabrielle: "I don't believe in the Gods that are the basis of our society and you think I'd believe in fairies?"

According to 95% of the urban fantasy I've read, religion is not a prereq for believing in fairies.

@huckabayjennifer said in Character Respond Answer Ask (May Edition):

Cassa: I do think it helps that we helped to raise the Goddess of Death...

I read this and I literally laughed and said "what?"

On the other hand, I read that for the first time after I just woke up.

Either way, the question remains. Explain this to me.

Also, if Juniper is a sentient being, I would also be offended that Rory considers him a pet.

@Josey I... don't even know how. The Reflections alone are well known for their engineering ability. On the other hand, even though they have planes (that are probably fairly advanced), everyone is terrified of those, too, and only get on them if they want to prove how brave they are and/or how rich they are.

Do it! Bring two characters! I love watching several characters interact with each other. In a way, it's more revealing than just one character. Example: If Tee was here without River, the way he acted would be different.

How... how do fairies work? Should I be concerned?

The stories about there were probably just warped by the "others" I deal with.

That is not a good enough reason for me. Wars throughout history have been warped to include the supernatural, but they still happened. So.... she should actually be asking herself if the warped stories paint the creatures in a better or worse light than they actually are.

Q: Are you afraid to die?

Resa: Not really. There's one person here that I would actually be worried about if I died, but she'd recover.

Winnie: Who? And do you need therapy?

    Resa: You? And no.

Winnie: :/ I don't know if I would recover very well if you just died.

Resa: Nobody just dies. There'd be a cause.

Winnie: What would the cause be?

Resa: How should I know? Do I look like I can see the future?

Winnie: I'm just saying, some causes of death are more traumatic than others...

Fi: Sometimes I think it would be better to be dead :/

Tee: I guess? To be honest, I try not to think too hard about topics like death.

    River: Yes.

Q: What was your childhood escape?

Resa: The outdoors and/or books and/or getting my siblings in trouble.

Winnie: Getting each other in trouble was the best. ^_^

Resa: sighs Those were the best.

Fi: To be honest, I never really had a stressful childhood? I mean, I guess hanging out with my siblings and/or friends? I didn't really have a lot of hobbies as a kid.

Tee: Just being somewhere relaxing was usually good enough for me.

River: What, your room? For me... I don't know. Maybe card games.

Q: If you could become any animal, what would it be and why?

    Fi: Just... no.

Nova: You know you'd be a basilisk ^_^

Fi: Those things are ugly though.

Nova: Then it wouldn't make a difference which form you were, human or basilisk.

    Fi: deep sigh

Nova: I'd be one with you. A dozen basilisks, wandering around and eating people. ^_^

    Fi: Why eat people though?

Nova: Why not? I bet HJ'd be tasty...

    Fi: Hmm. Maybe.

...to be fair, in their situation, you might not want to eat HJ necessarily, but you might not necessarily feel bad about his untimely death, either. :/

Resa: Why would anyone want to be an animal?

Winnie: Yeah, I mean, most of them either get eaten fairly quickly in their life span, have short lifespans, or live in zoos and/or labs.

Tee: I always thought birds were cool. I'm not sure which species particularly, but I always liked the idea of being able to travel places.

River: As a bird, you really wouldn't care.

Tee: No one said I don't get to keep my consciousness -_-

River: I would be a tree. pauses Wait, trees aren't animals.

Q: Do you tend to have dry skin?

That's less weird than the question I was going to ask, which was "do you tend to have dry lips", so if you're not really sure how to answer that:

Q: How do you act when you're anxious?

  • @huckabayjennifer Thanks. ^.^

Juniper: I'm a fire breathing beast who strikes fear into the hearts of men. She's...a house cat.

This really got a laugh out of me. And I was thinking that if I had a dragon for a friend I wouldn't call them a pet, but then I realized... I call my friends worse on a regular basis so maybe I would. >.>

@Josey As comical as that sounds, even Johanna knows not to try and take that hat. If Gabrielle is willing to admit something has sentimental value, you don't touch it if you want to live.

    @typical_demigod

According to 95% of the urban fantasy I've read, religion is not a prereq for believing in fairies.

    Well, I don't write Urban Fantasy. :P

To be honest, though, I don't know how the heck to label what I'm writing half the time anymore. :/

But the point she was trying to make is that from a logical standpoint if she won't believe the magical beings widely believed by society to have been real, why would she ever believe magical beings widely believed by society to be nothing more than children stories? At best, since fairies aren't that much a part of Valcrest culture at all, to be honest.

River: I would be a tree. pauses Wait, trees aren't animals.

    Best answer. Love it.

Q: What was your childhood escape?

Gabrielle: "Uhm... Literally escaping. As in... Running fast and far and never looking back."

Gerald: "Books were the only constant in my life when I was a kid. I was always traveling back and forth between the White Shadows camp and Newhaven. My parents were great, but always busy. I didn't have any friends until I was older... So, yeah, books."

    Johanna: inaudible mumbles

    Gerald: "What was that?"

    Johanna: shakes head "Nothing."

    Gerald: "Okay then."

Sebastian: "I don't remember ever needing to escape anything when I was younger, but more recently... Even though I think the part of my life that counted as childhood is far behind at this point... Recently training has been that for me. If I get really, really, tired I can almost sleep through the night too."

Gabrielle: "If you're enjoying it, maybe Tucker's being too easy on you."

Sebastian: "I didn't say it was fun!"

    Gerald: cracks knuckles "Okay then..."

    Sebastian: "Fuck my life!"

Dani: "Pulling pranks on people. I haven't grown up much as you can see."

Lena: "I learned to read when I was four and after that... Well, I thought that if I could really understand how things work then I'd never have to be afraid of them again. Such as, if I know all the little intricate ways the human body works and all the little things that can cause it to break or shut down, then I wouldn't be so afraid of death. And if I could understand the purpose of experiencing pain; at least on a physical level, I wouldn't be so afraid of getting hurt..."

    Dani: "Did that work?"

Lena: "It's a work in progress."

Questions for you all: If you could become any animal, what would it be and why?

Gabrielle: "I think I'd like to be a camel. At least I'd have a good excuse to spit on people."

    Johanna: "That's horrible."

Gabrielle: "See, if I was a camel you wouldn't say that."

Gerald: "Is this one of your 'I don't really care' answers?"

    Gabrielle: "Oh, absolutely."

Gerald: "I'd like to be a dog. Even if I was a stray, people are less likely to kill and eat dogs even if they're really hungry. People who are homeless and starving will still feed their dogs, I mean... From a survival standpoint, it pays to be a dog."

Gabrielle: "You'd have to be a cute dog, though. Pretty sure people will kill dogs if they're not cute."

    Johanna: "... I am NOT a cat."

    Gerald: snort-chuckle

What is this dialogue... are you people high right now... wth... rubs temples

Dani: "I'd like to be a wolf, but then I feel saying that would be stupid and cliche, because we are in the Wolfpack and we worship wolves."

Lena: "I'd like to be a bird. Birds are smart, they can fly, and people generally expect them to be assholes."

Q: How do you act when you're anxious?

Gabrielle: "The same as I always do. Because my anxiety is no one's goddamn business."

Gerald: "I could answer that more accurately, but she'd definitely kill me, so I won't. Me, personally, I don't think I feel anxious. I might get anxious, but it's probably not bad enough that I'm aware of it if that makes sense."

    Johanna: shakes head

Gabrielle: "Jo had a lot of panic attacks around the time we met, but they almost never happen now."

Sebastian: "I'm not a very anxious person, but I guess when I do feel anxious I fidget a lot."

Kyle: "You do that thing with your foot when you're nervous, it's annoying."

Sebastian: begins to rapidly tap his heel against the ground "What, this? Yeah, that's fidgeting. I don't like it either."

Dani: "My life is a bottomless pit of anxiety. I learned to cope."

Lena: "I'm not that anxious, but when I do get anxious I try to just... Get as far from people as I can. If I'm not alone then I can't shake the feeling off. No offense, but people just make everything worse."

Q: Have you ever been sick?

  • @Blackbird said in Character Respond Answer Ask (May Edition):

To be honest, though, I don't know how the heck to label what I'm writing half the time anymore. :/

For the most part, I just base it on my world. Is it in a secondary world? Yes? Far advanced (or not) via magic, technology, or catstrophic event? Yes? Based on which one of those I have selected and the reasons why, I'm able to categorize whether it's sci-fi or fantasy :P

Question: How advanced is medicine in Valcrest? This isn't the first time that Lena has said something about being interested in medicine, so I'm curious about how advanced it is/how many books there are/etc.

Gerald: "I'd like to be a dog. Even if I was a stray, people are less likely to kill and eat dogs even if they're really hungry. People who are homeless and starving will still feed their dogs, I mean... From a survival standpoint, it pays to be a dog."

I mean... I think it depends on what the hunger level is.... once people get desperate enough, everything is fair game.

    On the Jamestown 1609-1610 winter:

Archaeologists have found evidence that they ate cats, dogs, horses, and rats.

On the plus side, dogs would have decent survival skills if they can get away from the hordes of starving people.

Q: Have you ever been sick?

Tee: Is that a trick question?

River: I think everyone has had a common cold or allergies at least once in their lives.

Fi: Eh, not really. I mean, I'm kind of sick in the head at this point, but I don't think I've ever been physically sick, really. It pays to have high living standards.

Winnie: I don't think I've ever been sick, or not to a degree that I remember it, but if injuries count, then 100%, I've hand those.

    Resa: Ha, me too.

Q: How old does someone have to be for you to consider them "old"?

  • Q: How do you act when you're anxious?
Rory: I think I agree with Gabrielle on this one...
Kal: Ha. You start micromanaging, and --
Rory: glares Recommend following in Gerald's footsteps.
    Kal: You don't scare me~
Juniper: nudges Kal with her nose But I could definitely eat you.
    Kal: You wouldn't.
    Juniper: Well, I'm hungry...
    Kal: ...

Cassa: jabs thumb at Curran This one gets quiet and snappy as hell. He also stops thinking about his actions and instead just does whatever he wants, which means he tends to make messes that are a little hard to clean up.
    Curran: ...
    Cassa: What? I'm not wrong.
Curran: I can answer for myself.
Cassa: That's definitely not what you were going to say.
    Curran: ...okay fine.

Q: Have you ever been sick?
    Rory: chuckles Nope.
Kal: One day that healing power of yours is going to run out and then you're going to experience the pain the rest of us have to deal with.
Rory: I mean I am going insane, so I think the universe has evened the score.
Kal: sighs I suppose there's that.

Curran: grins I haven't really been -- I mean, I've gotten the common cold, like, once -- but Cassa here...
Cassa: grumbles It's not my fault that I become delusional.
Curran: It's so great~ Unfortunately, she's still clear headed enough that I can't get away with video taping it for future reference...

Q: How old does someone have to be for you to consider them "old"?
Rory: Er... I don't know? Too old to date? Isn't the rule divide by half your age and subtract seven or something?...
    Kal: ...Welp.
    Rory: glances at Kal What?
Kal: Oh nothing. I'd probably consider "old" to be my Elders. They were nearing 2000 years old when they exiled me, which means now they'd be close to 2500...
    Rory: blinks Alrighty then.

Curran: Considering I hunt creatures like the First Vampire, I don't really have a threshold for that...
Cassa: For humans, I'd probably say...fifty or sixty would qualify.
    Curran: For humans?
Cassa: Well with anything else, it's hard to tell. Like, once Elves age faster than humans for the first ten years -- the rate is about double -- and then after that, 100 years for them is equivalent to 1 year for humans.

    Q: What's your favorite movie?

  • @typical_demigod Thats funny how most would mercy kill. but you gotta ask yourself. would you let them suffer painfully or end it quickly?

@Josey Clyde and Jacklyn are about 16 and Oscar is in his late 20's

    Do you believe in fairies

    Clyde: The hell are those?

Jacklyn: Nope, but I know of them unlike someone.

Clyde: Cause someone was taken in first! Thats why!

Oscar: sighs good grief. But no, I don't believe in them.

    Are you afraid to die

Clyde: I'll die when I reach a higher life.

Jacklyn: Not really but I just wanna be remembered by someone.

Clyde: kisses Jacklyn's cheek hush, you'll always be remembered.

Oscar: Well, its better to die sometimes than to live under the storming arrows of misfortune.

    Jacklyn and Oscar: The hell?!

    Oscar: oh nothing.

If you could be an annual what would it be and why

Clyde: All I know are flies, rats, and mosquitoes.

Jacklyn: A tiger! Then I wont have people attack me.

Clyde: The fuck is a tiger?

Jacklyn: Its a big cat with orange and black stripes.

    Clyde: never heard of it.

Oscar: Cause you don't read books on animals. You just read philosophical stuff.

How do you act when anxious

Clyde: I have what Oscar calls a panic attack. Still don't understand what that is but thats what happens.

Oscar: It means you become extremely nervous and scared. As for me I pace around paranoid.

Jacklyn: I just end up wanting to be comforted by someone.

    Have you ever been sick

Oscar: Nobody is born without sickness here. No matter where you are there is always sickness.

    What harms you mentally most

  • @huckabayjennifer How long do Elders tend to live, though?

@SirBlood I think for all of them it might fit for the world, but then you have to ask, would it have been impossible to drop them into the safety of a healer/doctor/whatever is in your world, if they were relatively nearby? For most of the characters that answered the question, they (or I assume?) have at least a little bit of first aid knowledge, which can honestly go a long way in determining if the person really is a lost cause or not. (Though people might get grumpy if they used the supplies and the person turned out the be a lost cause.)

    Q: What's your favorite movie?

Winnie: That's a hard question. Hmm. I'll have to think about that.

Resa: What's that one, with Rock-Weave?

Winnie: You gotta be more specific, man.

Resa: Anyway, it was one of those ones.

    Winnie: You're so unpatriotic :/

Tee: There was one about robots that were actually saving the world instead of taking it over. That would've been decent, if they got some good actors.

River: But is it your favorite?

Tee: I don't have a ton of time for TV in my life. It's the one I can think of.

    River: Shame on you.

Fi: There was a show about the end of the Old World, which was heavily dramatized and barely realistic, but the characters were cool.

I don't think any of them understood that the question was favorite movie, not "here's something I watched recently and enjoyed!"

Q: What harms you mentally most?

    Fi: My life.

Tee: I was bullied a lot as a kid and I have similar issues with people now :/

Resa: Being around my witch of a mother -_-

Winnie: She's not... erm... well... hugs

Q: What's a good way to cheer you up?

  • @typical_demigod said in Character Respond Answer Ask (May Edition):

Question: How advanced is medicine in Valcrest? This isn't the first time that Lena has said something about being interested in medicine, so I'm curious about how advanced it is/how many books there are/etc.

ehems Let's say that medicine will become a lot more advanced in Valcrest because of all the interest Lena has in it. But in Shadows Rise... They know about infections, sterilization, they attempt anesthesia prior to surgery although it's far from fully effective, so it's loads better than real life medieval medicine, but you're better off not getting too fucked up in battle if you can help it. If you get an artery or vein slashed, depending on the severity, even if a healer is standing right next to you when it happens, you're gonna bleed out and die. Something that in modern days would require a more delicate surgical procedure to repair will almost definitely kill you unless someone like Annie is around and they can magically heal it. And there won't be someone like Annie around until she's born, so in this timeline; tough luck, buddy.

As for books... There are some anatomy studies that are available to the public through the cities' archives (those are like public libraries, but more boring because it's mostly just documents and public records), but the bulk of the knowledge comes from the White Shadows and gaining access to their archives is extremely difficult. Especially since the clan originated in a city that was annihilated for its knowledge. You need permission from their leader to enter the archives and you're definitely not allowed to take anything out, but... The White Shadows are in very good terms with the Wolfpack and Lena being the Alpha's daughter... She manages to get her hands on some copied material here and there.

And one day this kind of knowledge will be easier to access, but in this timeline, not so much. >.>

@SirBlood Your character don't know much about a lot of stuff, why is that? ^.-

Q: How old does someone have to be for you to consider them "old"?

Gabrielle: "I haven't had anyone I know live long enough for me to consider them old."

    Gerald: "I don't know... Sixty?"

Gabrielle: "You know someone who's sixty?"

Gerald: "Jon Witters is fifty-three... So that's kinda close. He'll probably live past his sixties."

    Johanna: "Who is that?"

Gabrielle: "That's the leader of the White Shadows. You don't remember him?"

    Johanna: shrug

    Kyle: "Thirty?"

    Gabrielle: "I'm... Twenty-nine..." frown

Kyle: "And you've lived a full life."

Sebastian: "Well, someone's not gonna live to old age like this..."

Kyle: "No, I mean, just... Objectively, how old to people actually get in Valcrest nowadays? Living past your forties is pretty hard, so I'm assuming at age thirty you should start feeling old. Otherwise, you just won't get a chance to."

Gabrielle: "Huh... Maybe I should take up knitting."

Gerald: "I'd like to see that." snort

Q: What harms you mentally most

Gabrielle: "Sure... Why don't I write down some instructions on how to murder me in my sleep while I'm at it?" -.-

Gerald: "I guess, fear, no? That's what most forms of mental trauma come down to."

    Johanna: "That makes sense."

    Dani: "Uhm... Pressure, I think."

Lena: "Stupidity. There's just too much of it in the world."

Q: How important is money to you?

  • @typical_demigod interesting

@Blackbird Clyde doesn't know much because he was born during the aftermath of the apocalypse. His mother died after raising him till he was about 9 and his father was never part of the picture. He was only taught to survive and do whatever he must live. But, he always did his best to forget her when she died. He does learn more and more from surviving books that he steals from the rich.

How important is money in your world

Clyde: It really isn't important but every single one of us humans are so greedy, we desire some form of riches to keep us going.

Oscar: So what will you do with your desired riches?

Clyde: Im not sure...thats a good question. But i don't have the answer to it.

Jacklyn: I think money is good. Its a way to build society back up and bring back stability.

Clyde: Good luck, this world is filled with mongrels that want nothing but what gives them life and wealth. If anything, they'll just hoard the money and not spend it. Cause deep down they know they wish to no longer be poor. To no longer live under muck and filth.

What's a good way to cheer you up

    Clyde: To write

Jacklyn: A hug will do it

    Oscar: A book or exercise

Your tied down and being tortured by a crazy woman. Why do you think she would harm you?
