Taking Tomb Raider as a recent example, they warn that sometimes forcing violent scenes can interfere with a realistic and consistent portrayal of your established characters.
I'm going to come right out and say I am not a fan of the new Tomb Raider reboot. There are many reasons for this, but I will point out that the extravagant death sequences were one of the reasons. It's not enough that she falls and that's the end. Oh no, let's have her fall, impale herself on something, and have something else come and rip her head off.
